Running Errands on Empty

 mom says

School back in session today.  I was afraid after the long weekend the kids would be less than enthusiastic about getting up and getting ready but it went smoothly.  This was a bonus for me as I had errands to run today and with my sleep schedule still messed up was not in the mood for an arguement.

I got the kids off to school and then came home to shower and get ready to go. I had to exchange some dollars to pounds so had to go to a mall in Orlando to get it done, then off to downtown Orlando for a 1 hour meeting, then back home to take the kids to a dental cleaning.  All this meant I was not going to get any sleep today.

My first stop was the mall to exchange the money.  Now you might wonder why I didn’t go to a bank but I tried that route and turns out you have to order it because they don’t keep money on hand at the bank….huh?  I kid you not.  I live outside of Orlando, Fl and for anyone who is unaware this is the home of Disney World, Sea World, Universal Studios and a massive convention center.  We get tons of toursit from all over the world but the bank doesn’t keep foreign money on hand…stupid if you ask me.  My options were the airport foreign money exchange booth or an exchange counter at the mall.  I went with the mall because the exchange rate was 100% better and the fee was waved based on the amount of money I was exchanging.

Being a Tuesday and early in the day the parking was a breeze and I managed to get in and out of the mall relatively quickly which was heaven.  I am not a shopper by nature so the mall holds no special interest to me.  The only time I enjoy the mall is when I have money to spend.  I have to admit that the man in my life and I went to a mall in London without a dime to spend and just wandered about looking in all the shops and it was a lot of fun.  I think it was more the company than the mall though.

Anyhow the exchange rate was better than the airport but still sucked.  It just sucks in general actually but it is better to get the cash than use the credit card.  When I was in England in February I had to use my bank card at a bank (yeah in England you can walk into a bank or the post office and get money exchanged but not in Orlando, Fl) and the exchange rate was terrible but it was an emergency so didn’t have choice.  So money exchanged and 1 errand run…two more to go.

I then had to go to a meeting that I was assured would only be an hour.  That was a false assurance.  The meeting was at 11 am and started 30 minutes late so there went the hour assurance.  Then the guy had to take his lunch at noon for an hour so I had to come back at 1 pm.  Oh and I forgot my Blackberry at home so I couldn’t even work on anything during his hour lunch.  The meeting resumed on time but took another 2.5 hours.  Now I had another appointment (kids dental cleaning) at 4:30pm on the other side of town.  I thought I would make it but alas that was not to be so.

I left downtown at 3:30pm and it takes 30 minutes to get home and another 15 minutes to get to the dentist office so with 1 hour I figured I had it covered.  I headed home on I-4 which is a major highway and on a Tuesday afternoon at 3:30pm there shouldn’t have been traffic but there was.  Not a little traffic but bumper to bumper, stop and go traffic.  I thought there must be an accident or something but there was nothing.  Seems after the long weekend people needed to leave work early on that first day back.

I got home but not in time to make the dental appointment so I had to call and cancel.  It takes 6 months to get these appointments so I was not happy at all.  I called the dentist office and couldn’t even get a live person, just recordings telling me to leave a message.  I kept calling back until someone finally picked up the phone.  The lady who I spoke with and explained why we wouldn’t make it was very polite and understanding which just annoyed me for some reason.  I didn’t reschedule as their dad usually does all the dental stuff I was just being the driver today.  She did remind me that it takes 6 months to get an appointment but I could call back daily to see if there were cancellations to try and get them in sooner….ugh.

I was already exhausted and my day wasn’t over yet.  I soooo wanted to take a nap but fought the urge by cleaning the kitchen.  I still needed to cook dinner which was hamburgers and french fries and no not from McDonalds (don’t think I didn’t consider it).  Luckily, my mom bought me this family sized gridle as a housewarming present years ago and it is the best appliance I have in my kitchen.  With this gridle I could cook all the hamburgers at once and even have room for bacon to go on the hamburgers.  Dinner was cooked in 15 minutes…whew.

After dinner was eaten it was time for helping with/checking on homework.  Thankfully the kids had their homework done and didn’t need me.  The only thing I had to do was go over the spelling words with the youngest one.  I am too tired to go into it now but I either have a very skewed memory of third grade spelling words or they have seriously raised the expectations for third graders.

I am so tired I am trusting the wee ones to go to bed on time by themselves.  It is 9pm and I am going to bed hopefully for a full nights sleep.

UPDATE:  It is now 11pm and I am awake…yep two hours of sleep from all that exhaustion.  I am telling you now if I ever meet up with the Sandman he is going to get the beating of a lifetime!

I just found this site and it is so funny how much like my life it is, except I am a married mom not a single one. I think we have all gone through those periods of not sleeping yet still having to do a million things, it just comes with being a parent.

I have been enjoying your stories and articles nice to have someone to commensurate with…keep it up and trust me you are not alone 🙂

OMG my dentist office does the exact same thing. It takes months and months to get an appointment. Who plans their life out 6 months in advance. I am proud of myself if I have the next week planned out. What pisses me off the most is that they make me wait all the time and have even canceled on me while I am in the waiting room buuuuuuttt if you are a minute late or cancel on them they freak out on you.
