Report Card Day

mom says

Today in my home is report card day.  One of those days of the school year kids either love or hate.  It is also one of the days that kids are the most creative in their excuses, at least for my kids.  The grades are in and there is no changing them, not like when I was a kid and a quick stroke of the pen turned that F into a B.  Today report cards are printed out by computers and in a lot of schools even available electronically online.  Poor kids there is no escape.

Overall, I knew what was coming as my kids’ school has an online system to check on the kids’ daily assignments, homework, grade so far and even get emails from the teachers.  I knew what was coming and so did they.  When I got the final copies handed to me, the excuses started instantly.  I don’t expect straight A’s but I do expect the grades to reflect their capabilities.  Some kids are great in school and in every subject and others aren’t, I get that.  Excuses sound great but they are just excuses and the time has past for any excuse to be acceptable.

Return of the X-Box

The big question of the day for them, was whether or not they would get the X-Box back.  I implemented a new rule this year that took the X-Box away during the week until grades came out.  Once the grades were in, depending on how well they did, would determine if and for how long they got the X-Box for.  This wasn’t an all or nothing scenario for the grades or the kids.  They were told at the beginning of the year what grades they needed to earn it back and the amount of time they would earn based on the grades.  They get to use that amount of time until the mid-term report comes out.  If their grades decline or get better, times and access will be adjusted.

Turns out only two of the four are getting the X-Box back.  One is getting it for 1 hour a night and the other is getting it for 1/2 hour a night.  The other two aren’t getting it back at all.  There was some grumbling about it not being fair and being mean but tough too bad.  I didn’t spring this on them. I spelled it out very specifically in the beginning of the year.  The consequence for poor grades is not getting the X-Box.  If you want to state that positively; the reward for getting good grades is getting the X-Box.

No one is getting the X-Box back full-time, that took getting all A’s and none of the four managed to do that, although the little one came close.  If you got any B’s you got it back for 1 hour a night during the week.  If you got any C’s then it is only back for 1/2 hour a night during the week.  There was no getting it back if there were any D’s or F’s.  It is a very simple premise and one they thought I wouldn’t enforce.  They figured if I gave it back to one of them that I would cave and give it back to all of them.  They were wrong.

It is actually pretty nice not being the bad guy anymore.  They can grumble about fairness but they got a fair deal.  I am not the one who is keeping the X-Box from them now.  I was the one who did keep it from them from the beginning of the year till now, that came with complaints, but as of this point it is all on them.  Their actions are the only thing keeping them from the X-Box. It will be their actions for the rest of the year that will determine their access to the X-Box, I am officially off the hook as the bad guy.

In Other News

The migraines finally came to an end late last night, that was a blessing.  I have found that I just don’t have time for stupid games with grown men anymore.  I learned I need to quit saying that I am going to do something on the website, like get the recipes up, because it makes the computer and WordPress turn on me.  I also learned a new trick for the website which I think I am going to have great fun with for years to come.

I am going to try to get some more recipes up tonight but my computer has decided it doesn’t like it when I try to upload photos of scary food.  The little trolls inside must be very afraid because they keep rejecting every attempt I make.  I coaxed one photo in so hopefully I can get the others by the computer troll patrol and finish it all up tonight.

Not only is the computer giving me problems the one poor lonely recipe I did get up took fours hour.  Plugins for WordPress are suppose to work right out of the box but let me say that isn’t always true.  Took a little re-writing of code and css to make it work and it still isn’t the way I want it but will have to do for now.  If not you will be waiting till next year to see some cute Halloween recipes.

Which reminds that next year is not too far off.  Once I get past Halloween, then comes Thanksgiving and then Christmas.  I have plans to spend the second half of Christmas abroad if everything works out the way I am hoping.  Actually if all goes as planned I might even be living abroad part-time, come next year.  It is all in the making but life is life and who knows what will happen between now and then.  Hopefully, some Halloween recipes on the website but I am not promising anything anymore.
