Nutrition

Our children today are leading a sedentary lifestyle. Kids sit all day at school and then come home to video games, television and fast food. Our children are becoming obese and we the parents are to blame. A lot of parents and doctors explain away unhealthy weight as “baby fat” and offer a wait and see solution to the problem. The problem is our kids are obese and doing nothing will not make it go away. Nutrition is one of the biggest factors then add to that their sedentary lifestyle and you have obesity not “baby fat”.

Nutrition and physical activity are a must for children of all ages. The physical activity part is relatively simple. Get your children moving!!! Go on walks, insist they go outside and play, shut off the television and take away the video games. Being outside doesn’t hurt your children it helps them.

Nutrition is not as simple. Your child’s nutrition is vital to their overall health. Obesity causes more problems than just poor self-esteem. Children are still growing and their bones developing. All the extra weight they are carrying around is doing damage. Diabetes is a major medical problem that is becoming more prevalent in children as the obesity rate rises.

We all know about healthy foods but how do we get our kids on board especially when there is a fast food restaurant on every corner. Kids learn from example and the example we are giving them is to take the easy route. We are the ones who stop and get the fast food or give in to the whining for the fast food. Just cutting out the fast food makes a world of difference but it is not the only solution.

We need to learn how to prepare healthy foods that are good to eat as well. We need to teach our children to make good food choices. We don’t have to suffocate them with healthy foods but we definitely need to introduce some into their diet. This doesn’t mean that we need to deny our children unhealthy foods it just means we need to limit them.

Obesity is a problem and it isn’t just “baby fat” no matter what anyone tells you. Don’t put your children on a diet, teach them to eat a balanced and healthy diet instead. If we can show our children how to eat healthy it will benefit them throughout their life. Don’t forget though, kids will follow your lead. If you are eating unhealthy food and fast food all the time they will make those same choices.

Nicely written. Obesity in kids is a huge and growing problem. Great to see a parent take responsibility and not blame the fast food companies and media entirely – thank you!
