Halloween Candy Buy Back Program

A few years back a dentist, who was worried about all the unhealthy effects of candy from Halloween, started a program to buy back Halloween candy.  The program was a great success and has expanded nationwide in the US.  Other organizations have gotten involved as well and every year the list grows.

The program is very simple.  Your kids take their Halloween candy in to a participating dentist and their candy is weighed.  The child receives $1.00 for each pound of candy they bring in.  The candy is then examined, boxed up and sent to the troops overseas through Operation Gratitude.  Not only are you getting rid of all that Halloween candy that sits around, the fights over the candy and the cavities but the kids are also helping the troops overseas.  Oh and the cash of course.

I am going to link you up for more information straight from the sources:

If you are a dentist office interested in participating in the program you can sign up here to be listed in the registry so parents can find you.

The Halloween buy back program even has a Facebook page where people are listing all kinds of dentist offices or organizations that are participating.  If you can’t find an office try posting a message on the Facebook page and see if someone else can help.  This is a great program so pass on the Facebook page to other parents who might be interested, please.

If you are a non-dentist office or organization that is interested in doing a Halloween candy buy back program and you want to donate the candy to the troops, you need to check out Operation Gratitude.  They organize tons of events and different ways to support the troops overseas.  Click on the Getting Involved tab on the main page for more information.

I would like to comment briefly on Operation Gratitude.  They organize so many ways to help the troops overseas.  Even if you can’t afford to donate money there are many free ways to help too.  During the month of October, adding the (hashtag) #cinnabonsaysthx to your tweet raised money to help the troops.  Cinnabon donated 10 cents for every tweet that included the #cinnabonsaysthx to it.  With all the people tweeting daily it can easily add up.  Check out Operation Gratitude every once in awhile and see how you can help support the troops overseas.
