Good To Be Home or Maybe Not

mom says

I went away and left 4 children ages 16 – 8 years old (yes they had some supervision I am not insane).  I didn’t expect to come home to a perfect house but I was expecting something to be done.  My kids have had the luxury of not really having to clean the house on a regular basis because I do it.  They have chores to keep their basic stuff picked up and taken care of but the real cleaning is done by me.  I am just particular about the way things get cleaned.

When I walked in the door this is the first thing I sawDifferent angle of laundry roomLaundry room full of laundry.  That would be my laundry room and the hallway to the door that leads to outside.  Upon investigation I am pretty sure no laundry has been done for some time and at the last minute they tried to do all the laundry at once.  Loads and loads of laundry.

In the below picture you can see a laundry basket full of clothes next to the dryer, which I was told were washed and dried.  Unfortunately folding or hanging the clothes didn’t seem to enter anyone’s mind.  When the clothes were done drying they just stuffed them into the basket.  In the picture on the right you can see that once the basket was full they resorted to just stuffing them on top of the dryer. I am looking at all this clean laundry and although I am thrilled it has been washed and dried, I am not looking forward to the ironing that now will be needed.  Ok well maybe not full ironing more like throwing a wet sock in the dryer with the wrinkled clothes and hoping the wrinkles haven’t set in too bad.  It is mainly t-shirts, jeans and shorts so the wet sock trick should do the job, I hope.

Laundry was still in the process of being done as the dryer and the washer were still running.  On top of that was at least two loads of towels on the floor next to the washer that still needed to be washed.  I am not sure who brillant plan it was to wait until the last day to do all the laundry in the house and no one is fessing up.  I do wonder what clothes they were wearing because I know there are not enough school uniforms to get through two weeks.  I was assured though that the uniforms were washed and clean when they wore them to school.  Clothes in a dryer

My oldest is in highschool so he no longer has to wear a uniform and he does reasonably have enough clothes to get him through two weeks but I am still questioning the common sense overall.  Speaking of highschool clothes, I was quite surprised to see the clothes these highschool kids are wearing.  When I had to pick up my son from school one day earlier this year, I saw kids wearing shorts and flip flops.  I thought it was like a special day but no it wasn’t.  Shorts and flip flops are acceptable clothing choices for highschool now.  I went to a private boarding school for highschool and it was skirts below the knee and blouses for the girls and dress pants with a button down shirt and tie for the boys so I was really shocked at the shorts and flip flops.  Not that it is really relevant just surprising.

After seeing the laundry room I was a little afraid to turn the corner but to my surprise all was good.  The main hallway was clean along with the playroom, living room and kitchen.  They even did the dishes and put them away.  They swept and mopped the floor (well sort of mopped) and cleaned the counters.  Even the inside of the microwave was clean.  I guess I can forgive the laundry since the rest of the house was up to par.

I have a stack of mail to go through, some notices from the school, something about the homecoming dance to deal with, get all my post formatted for the website (will explain later), a tire that keeps going flat to fix, a DVR full of the new season of shows to watch and of course the laundry.

It is always nice to take a break or be away but it is even nicer to come home and see the kids and feel needed.  It is also good to know that all the things I have been trying to teach them about cleaning up after themselves and taking care of the home are sinking in because I won’t be around forever to provide cleaning services.

Now I am exhausted and going to bed.
