Facebook Hoax wasting my time

mom says

Here I am diligently working on my weight loss articles like a good girl and then I do it {sigh}.  I can’t help myself and in doing so am ripped away from the work I should be doing to write this.  Yes I can at times be easily distracted by shiny objects as well.

The evil that was my distraction was Facebook.  I just looked for a minute to see if anything special was going on in Facebook world.  I swear I was only there to look.  This is what happens when you work at home, for yourself and have no boss looking over your shoulder and blocking websites like Facebook for your network to keep you on track.

So I come across this dire warning about a new drug affecting our elementary kids and to watch out for it.  Now over a million people have viewed this page so I am not alone.  The page though is false and worse it comes from a “Causes” page.

The Cause is “I am 100% Drug Free”.  I am not passing on the page because I have doubts about a legitimate cause using false reports that scare people, parents especially.  The cause has raised $210 and right now its main purpose seems to be pushing people to join another cause “The Partnership for a Drug-Free America” which has raised $3170.00 dollars.

The original post comes from a member of the I am 100% Drug Free who apparently saw the dire warning and wanted to pass it on to other parents.  The warning is about “strawberry quick”  a form of meth being pushed to elementary kids that looks like strawberry pop-rocks (if you don’t know what pop-rocks are I feel sorry for you and you need to google it…grrr damn that google…bing it instead!!!).  Now whenever I see these warnings I go check them out to see the validity of them and how much of a threat they really are so I can react with the proper amount of horror and awe at the degradation of our society and predators and drug pushers on kids.

www.hoax-slayer.com/strawberry-quick-meth.shtml and www.snopes.com/horrors/drugs/candymeth.asp are the top results.  Took me about 30 seconds to see that the dire warning is a hoax and not real at all.  The hoax started 3 years ago so why it is still around is beyond me.

I have serious doubts about any “cause” that is using false reports to scare people, especially parents about the safety of their kids to get people to join or check out their cause.  I will not join their cause nor will I join the cause they are pushing “The Paretnership for a Drug-Free America” even though both causes on the surface sound like good causes.  The first one is peddling the blatantly false scare story and the second cause is connected to it in some way.

I am in awe of how many Facebook groups and causes and even websites on the internet will use these false reports to get traffic to their sites.  I don’t believe in this kind of blatant dishonesty it takes away all credibility.  The first cause should have checked out the dire warning before posting it on the cause page and the second “cause” should check out the Facebook pages that are pushing traffic to them to make sure they are legitimate or it brings down their credibility by relation.

Anyway, now I have been distracted from my own work by a false report and wasted valuable time.  I have to say I am also amazed that the false hoax page was viewed over 1 million times and in the recent comments section there is nothing about it being a hoax.  There will be in a minute though {{innocent}}.  I hate false scare tactics being used by the media, groups, causes, and people in general.  I am annoyed by sheep who read these warnings and just pass them on without even taking the 30 seconds to check them out first.  If you are so worried about the warning and enough so to pass it on, you would think you would want all the information you can get on it and would take the 30 seconds to look it up and in doing so would find out that it is in fact false and nothing to be worried about and stop the spreading of false information and scaring the crap out of parents.

Happy happy day to all and now I need to get to back work….I take comfort in knowing that even though I lost valuable work time, I hopefully will save other workers and employers the same loss.  That is right it is me ….Mom saving the world from wasted work time, exposing one false hoax after another….ok maybe not but it sounds good right.

Oh and yeah I was one of the millions of people who got sucked into the Google version of Pac Man, I told you I can be distracted by shiny objects sometimes and I guess should add blink lights to that as well.
