Exercise – oh the evil evil exercise

Exercise is the real key to weight loss. You can not diet your weight away. No exceptions it just isn’t possible. Your body will adjust to the amount of food you eat and you will eventually end up starving yourself. Please don’t make me explain again why starvation diets don’t work. I hope by now you understand completely why starvation doesn’t work.

You have to exercise it is just a fact of life, but wait it is not as bad as it sounds. When people say exercise we start thinking about the gym, aerobics, jogging, biking or complicated routines. Exercise doesn’t have to be that complicated.

You just need to move and more than you have been. You need to add some consistency to that movement so you are doing the extra movement daily. If you move more than you have been and do it daily then you are exercising.

No way you say, that isn’t exercise at all. Of course it is. Who is to say that exercise must be a specific movement or routine? Yes, traditionally exercise does equate to those things but it doesn’t have to be those things.

Move more than you used to and move consistently that is all you need. Notice I didn’t say get your heart rate up while you are moving either. All you need to do is move, I am serious about this stop making weight loss complicated.

Some different ideas and recommendations of things you can do to get moving:

The Wii is not just for kids. A great way to get some exercise and something you can have fun doing is the Wii. Wii sports, Wii Fit, Wii Fit Plus and Wii Sports Resorts are all great ways to get a quick 15 minutes of good quality movement.

With Wii sports which comes with the Wii Console you get boxing, baseball, tennis, golf and bowling.

Wii Fit and Wii Fit Plus with Balance Board (Wii) have yoga, aerobics, and strength training traditional exercises.

There is also the EA Sports Active (Wii). Now I have this one and wasn’t super impressed with it overall. It does the job but it feels like exercise. If you don’t mind that then it is great. I don’t like exercise and would rather be doing something fun and something I enjoy.

Wii Sports Resort, which is something I got to play but don’t yet own, has wake-boarding, swordplay, basketball, table tennis, archery, canoeing, cycling and more. It is great for doing a little work each day and having variety.

If you don’t yet own Wii they are great for family fun as well as fitness. Check out the out the Wii console with Wii Sports Resort bundled package below.

You can go to the gym and get the more traditional exercise if you like.

24 hours fitness is great as it is open 24 hours. I live in an area where shift work is the common so being able to access the gym at any time is wonderful.

Bally’s is the gym I used before 24 hour fitness made its way onto the scene. Both have different membership packages so take the time to really check them out and see what fits best into your life and budget.

Some other things can include anything from gradening, taking a walk, kicking the ball around with the kids, and going for a bike ride around the block. The important thing is to put the time in and do something.

You probably want a better explanation than I told you to do it, so here it is in a nutshell. I explained previously that your brain sends out signals to pull energy from either the fuel tank or the fat stores when the body needs energy. Moving is one of the fastest why to trigger that signal to the brain. When you move you use energy and the brain sends out that signal to grab some energy so you can complete the task.

The brain actually sends out that signal for every thing you do because every thing from taking a breath to running a marathon takes energy. Right now you are either gaining weight or you are maintaining a weight you don’t want to maintain. That is why you are here reading because you want to lose weight. The reason you are gaining or just maintaining is because your body is taking in more energy (food) than it is using resulting in an overage that is stored as fat. If you are maintaining your weight then you are taking in and using the same amount of energy. You could be doing what I commonly do and that is not eating enough. If you consistently eat less than your body requires the brain stops sending signals to use the fat stores and actually tells your body to hold on to them so you don’t starve!

I have already shown you the process of how the body uses energy. So you know you need to fill up and deplete the good productive energy fuel tank first and then get the body to pull from the fat stores. You do this by moving, any movement beyond what you already do will result in more energy being used getting you closer to the point where the fuel tank is depleted and the fat stores are used.

That is the goal to reduce those fat stores. Get moving that is all it takes. Don’t focus on heart rates and length of time just move more than you are moving now. Once you see some results, have a little more energy and see that it can work then you can start to add some more specific traditional exercises. However, as you will find out, you still don’t need to spend hours upon hours exercising to lose weight.

Once you get to a more specific exercise routine below are some of the exerise routines and videos I have used in the past and currently use to help me achieve my weight loss. You don’t have to go buy an expensive exercise series. A few videos to use at home is all you need. Even if you prefer to go to the gym, it never hurts to have a video or two at home in case you can’t make it to the gym one day.

I am a big fan of Jillian Michaels’ exercise videos. I use them and they don’t require tons of extra equipment or fancy gadgets. The two I am using right now are Jillian Michaels: No More Trouble Zones (Full Frame) and Jillian Michaels: Yoga Meltdown (Full Frame). I have found that I enjoy yoga just not the full one traditional class type.

There is a Wii game based on her workouts Fitness Ultimatum 2010 – Jillian Michaels (Wii) but I haven’t had an opportunity to try it out so I am not sure how it stacks up. If anyone has used it, I would love hear some feedback.

Denise Austin has several good videos as well. She has a greater cardio approach and when I am just trying to build muscle tone I prefer that to be the focus. Overall though I would recommend Denise Austin’s videos any day. I have an older series of hers but again that was back when I thought cardio was the be all end all in exercise for women.

Here are some of the more recent videos in her series:

Denise Austin: Hit The Spot: Core Complete (Full Frame)

Denise Austin’s Personal Training System (Full Frame)

Denise Austin – Hit The Spot: Ten 5-Minute Target Toners (Full Frame)
