Education

At some point all parents hear the same thing from their kids, “why do I have to go to school?” The simple answer we usually give is, “because I said so”. But why is education important? Children learn far more things than they will ever utilize in their adult lives from elementary to high school. So why?

In this day and age, education is vital as it is the key to a career. Without a GED or high school diploma you can’t into college. Without a college degree you can’t get a job that will even come close to supporting even a single person. Even a college education guarantees you nothing.

If you don’t focus on education, your child’s career choices are severely limited. You have to start out very early and very young. Take note of your child’s interest and help them cultivate them and show them how different aspects of education can help them grow up and have a career doing something they love and are passionate about instead of just a job.

Now if you are trying to explain this to a teenager it kind a feels like you are talking to a wall. Teenagers can rationalize and they see that they aren’t going to need pre-calculus in their life so it’s a little harder. If you started when they were young it’s a little easier but if you didn’t it is not impossible now. Getting your teenager to see that although, true, they won’t need pre-calculus in their life, it’s the process of how to arrive at the answers that they do need. Being able to find the value of X irrelevant, but being able to reason, use logic, organize theories and apply them is what they need to learn how to do because those skills they will need and use in everyday life.

So the next time your child asks that age old question, “why do I have to go to school?”, you can stick with, “because I said so” or you can take some time to explain that it is not school that is important it’s the skills they learn in school.
