Cleaning Out The Old Hard Drive

mom says
The last two days I undertook a project to finally go through all the back up of back ups of back ups on my computer hard drive.  Every time I had to reinstall Windows I would just back up the current drive ensuring I saved everything I needed.  I went through a brief period of having to reinstall Windows several times as the computer was dying a slow death.  When I got my current computer back in January 2010, it came with a Terabyte hard drive so I just stuck all the back ups and back ups of back ups on the drive.  I kept telling myself I would go through them but that didn’t happen until now.

Turns out I had 26GB of duplicate data or data I no longer needed saved in all those back ups.  I had all these nifty files like copy of C drive, things to transfer, copy of G drive, old drive and the like.  I found a program called Duplicate Cleaner and got to work.  Now I will link you to Duplicate Cleaner because 1) it is free and 2) it works amazingly.  However before you click on that link and install this nifty program pay attention:

The program will find duplicate files and group them in a list for you that can be sorted.  DO NOT just select them all or select 1 copy of each and start deleting.  The options are there but it is not a good idea.  Review the files first before you start deleting if you are unsure.  There is an image previewer for images so you can see exactly what the duplicate images are and if in fact they are duplicate or just the same size and name but different images.  You can open the containing folder with a simple right click on the file name for documents.  Take the time to check if you are unsure.  Some programs specifically have duplicate files and they are meant to be there.

Ok now that you have read my little warning you may proceed to the Duplicate Cleaner site and download at will.  Just for note, I am in no way affiliated with the company that makes this product.  I found it on my own volition and am recommending it based solely on my experience with the program.  I have not been and will not be paid in any way for this recommendation.  I just find it to be an excellent program.

The downside to cleaning out the old files

When I started this project I didn’t stop to think about all the files that were stored in those back ups.  I was thinking purely of increased productivity for my little computer and the joy of finally getting around to cleaning out those files.  There was a downside.

As I was cleaning out the files I came across old emails from my ex, old photos that were long forgotten, sweet letters and chat conversations that now caused pain instead of happy memories.  I never really thought about the emotional impact.  I couldn’t help but reread the old chat conversations even though I knew I shouldn’t.  The sweet words filled the page and I wondered how I could have been so fooled by them.  They were from the man I thought I would spend the rest of my life with.  The one who you just know from the first meet that they are the one.  It turned out I was wrong and he wasn’t the one.  To this day, my head accepts that but I am not sure my heart ever will.

Don’t get me wrong there were plenty of gems that I had forgotten about too that brought a smile or chuckle.  For me I tend to hit save and worry about it later and sometimes that later turns into never.  I had old websites bookmarked that I thought were awesome in the moment but never went back too.  I found some old music which I instantly played over and over and thought I had been crazy to forget about.  There were also the funny emails and pictures that get forwarded to everyone and anyone.

Thankfully there was no one here but me.  I can imagine having a spouse or partner around while pulling up old emails from past loves.  Pulling up pictures that were acceptable at the time but might not be considered acceptable now.  I didn’t come across any porn or anything but I can imagine it will probably happen to some.  Those kinds of things probably wouldn’t go over to well with your new spouse or partner standing near by.  It wouldn’t matter that you didn’t save those things to keep forever and ever or because it was some keepsake.  No that probably wouldn’t matter at all.  You could try explaining it was because you just didn’t think about those things or that person any longer and that might get you out of the doghouse later on but in the moment it won’t be fun.  I can hear the fights brewing already so be careful who you clean around.

Don’t let the downside scare you off, it was definitely worthwhile.  I no longer have to look at those files thinking, someday I will get around to them.  That day has now came and went.  My hard drive thanks me, the Windows search engine thanks me, my computer memory thanks me and I thank me.  It was long overdue.  Plus now I have even more room to fill up with new things to save, that I will probably forget about as well, at some point.

Well my “audience” will be happy to know I am doing my Halloween photo shoot this afternoon. Guess you will have to come back at Halloween then!

Or maybe “you” should look at the ones you already have.
